During Year 2, students begin to put together what they have learned in Prep and Year 1 to develop deeper understandings. In Science, they explore how different materials can be recycled for new purposes, how forces affect how objects move and all about our solar neighbourhood. In English, they learn to write a simple information report and persuasive text, as well as simple imaginative stories, while in Maths, students work with numbers to 1000.

In Year 2, we teach and assess the Australian Curriculum. Students are taught and assessed in English, Maths, Science, HASS (History and Geography), Technology (Design and Digital technologies), The Arts and HPE. The Arts, HASS and HPE are taken by a Specialist Teacher, while all other subjects are taught and assessed by the class teacher.

Deep Learning in Year 2

In Year 2, the Deep Learning focus is on beginning to develop skills for learning. There is a focus on the concept of perseverance, and how to persevere through learning challenges. Students also explore the concept of how to learn through beginning to take notes as they research their own topic. They learn about the concepts of empathy and compassion and also learn how to see things from someone else's perspective.

Their Global Competencies focus includes exploring issues related to endangered animals, exploring the world through learning about continents and countries, designing an object that uses push or pull to use in a place where roads are not available, and learning about water as a resource. They also explore issues they are interested in as they learn to write persuasive texts.

School events for Year 2

Every year, our Year 2 students take part in a number of special events including the HumBee (Spelling Bee), Find the Hump (Maths Bee) and the H factor. The H factor is Humpbong's answer to The X Factor, where students perform first for their class, then if selected, their year level and finally, if selected, showcase their talents during our H factor Variety Performance during the last week of school for the year.

The 2023 planned excursion program for Year 2 includes a school-based planetarium show at the start of Term 2, run by Starlab Education. Later in Term 2, students visit the Caboolture Historical Village to explore how everyday life, and technology, have changed over time. In Term 4, Year 2 participate in our Learn to Swim program at the Dolphins Aquatic Centre, Redcliffe.
