During Year 1, students explore the world around them. In Science, they explore living things, how light and sound are produced, how we can make physical changes to materials and changes we can see in the sky. In English, they explore how authors portray characters and innovate on familiar texts with repetitive patterns, as well as learning how to write poems, recounts, procedures and retells of familiar stories. They also develop their bank of sight words. In Maths, students work with numbers to at least 100. They begin to learn their addition and subtraction facts.

In Year 1, we teach and assess the Australian Curriculum. Students are taught and assessed in English, Maths, Science, HASS (History and Geography), Technology (Design and Digital technologies), The Arts and HPE. The Arts, HASS and HPE are taken by a Specialist Teacher, while all other subjects are taught and assessed by the class teacher.

Deep Learning in Year 1

In Year 1, the Deep Learning focus is on students further developing their skills in how to learn: how to identify when something is a learning challenge and what to do, that there are links between how people feel and how they behave and their rights and responsibilities in the classroom. They also learn how to talk with their team or group and share resources and have a focus on how to communicate using topic words and in full sentences. Their Global Competencies focus includes learning about citizenship through caring for pets, exploring other cultures through their stories and learning about local and global issues such as how to recycle.

School events for Year 1

Every year, our Year 1 students take part in a number of special events for the Junior School, including the Easter Bonnet Parade, Early Years Celebration and Grandparents' Day, as well as taking part in whole school events such as the HumBee (Spelling Bee), Find the Hump (Maths Bee) and the H factor. The H factor is Humpbong's answer to The X Factor, where students perform first for their class, then if selected, their year level and finally, if selected, showcase their talents during our H factor Variety Performance during the last week of school for the year.

The 2022 planned excursion program for Year 1 includes a visit by Larriken Puppets in Term 1 to take part in hands-on puppet show. In Term 2, students will leave the school to go on a mysterty excursion, and in Term 3, they will stay after school to attend the fun activities at the Year 1 Camp. In Term 4, Year 1 participate in our Learn to Swim program at the Dolphins Aquatic Centre, Redcliffe.
