Year 2

During Year 2, students begin to put together what they have learned in Prep and Year 1 to develop deeper understandings. In Science, they explore how different materials can be recycled for new purposes, how they can use what they know about the needs of living things to help living things grow, how forces affect how objects move and how they can sustainably use water within the water cycle. In English, they learn to write a simple information report and persuasive text, as well as innovate on poems and familiar tales, while in Maths, students work with numbers to 1000.
Year 2 students will study Digital Technologies in Terms 1 and 2, with our Digital Technology Coach and their class teacher. They will learn how to program in Scratch Junior using iPads.
During Term 2, students will engage with a New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL) unit, where they will explore how we can sustain the lifecycles of living things, so they don't become extinct.
During 2018, our Year 2 students will take part in a number of whole school events such as the Spell-a-thon *Hum-Bee), Art Show, Find the H.U.M.P and the H factor, as well as the Early Years Celebration.
The planned excursion program for Year 2 includes an exciting excursion to Australia Zoo in Term 2 to learn more about the needs of living things. Also in Term 2, Year 2 students will visit the Redcliffe Museum to learn how changing technology has affected peoples’ lives. In Term 3, students will take part in two Guided Local History Walks, to learn about significant places in our local community, as well as take part in a hands-on craft incursion by Reverse Garbage, where students will make an object that uses push/pull forces to move. In Term 4, students will visit North Pine Dam to learn about the urban water cycle. Also in Term 4, Year 2 students participate in our Learn to Swim program at the Redcliffe City Pool.
More information about all these activities will be provided closer to the date.
The 2018 Year 2 curriculum documents are available for you to access. These include parent newsletters, information about excursions and parent information sessions, as well as English assessment tasks.
